Haim
Haim Alony (84), gets up every morning at five to work in his embroidery factory in Kiryat Ha-Melacha in Tel Aviv.
When I started photographing Grandpa Haim, I wanted to document the legacy I saw in his hands. I wasn’t satisfied with just documenting the embroidery work. I stood in front of him, in front of the machines, in front of the workbench and the shelves, and saw how time was evident in the material. Each photograph created a searching look between a generation of creators and a generation of observers. Through the lens, I tried to bridge the time between grandfather and grandson and the lost memory of Father Eid, who inherited the profession from him without knowing him. This is a series of photographs of quiet movement in a noisy environment, a series in which I search for the deep connection between the time that has passed, the craft, and tradition.
